The Renaissance Castle of Krogen (1572-1629)
After the mid 1500's new attack methods made the castle unsuited as a fortress, but the state of the castle also made it unfit to meet the standards of a royal residence. These two factors made the castle very much useless to the country of Danmark. However, King Frederik II married Sofie of Mecklenburg in 1572 and were looking for a new royal residence. The King and his wife decided to modernize Kronborg Castle in 1974 by adding appartments and several stories in order to join and connect several wings of the castle. After construction was completed in 1585, the King and his wife moved into the Krogborg Castle, marking a beguining of a new era for the fortress.
