Krogen Destroyed / Captured (1631 - 1658)
On the night between September 24 and 25, 1629, most of the Kronborg Castle was destroyed by a fire. The main walls of the castle remained, but the majority of the castle was ruined. The current King of Denmark, Christian IV, wanted to rebuild the castle immediately. Reconstruction began in 1631, and after six years of rebuilding the castle was completed once again. King Christian took the opportunity to modernize the castle during the rebuilding process, by covering walls and ceilings with large Danish paintings. However, the Dano-Swedish wars between 1657 and 1660 were very hard on the Kronborg Castle, with the low point coming in September 1658 when it was bombarded and captured by Sweden. When the Sweds eventually left the castle at the conclusion of the war, they took most of the castles large paintings with them.
